The PS3 is probably the most popular gaming console around these days, but the downside is the games are expensive so even the ones who own consoles hardly use it because a PC is a much better option for gaming.

BUT the developers from the ps3 scene have released CUSTOM FIRMWARES (CFW) which basically lets you download games from the internet and play them on your jailbroken ps3. ( PIRACY ) Unfortunately there is some bad news

The first CFWs for the ps3 was released a few years back, after that SONY patched the loopholes in their systems and since then there havn't been any developments in the PS3 SCENE so no new CUSTOM FIRMWARE.

The latest PS3 OFFICIAL FIRMWARE VERSION is 4.11. CFW is available only for version 3.55. so this means the latest games that require firmware versions higher than 3.55 CANNOT be played on a jailbroken ps3.

Going by the saying, SOMETHING is better than NOTHING i decided to jailbreak my ps3 and finally after 2 years of gathering dust my ps3 is back in action



SO WHAT DO YOU NEED TO JAILBREAK YOUR PS3?

1. A ps3 console with a FIRMWARE VERSION LESS OR EQUAL TO 3.55. If it's anything above 3.55 forget about jailbreaking

2. An external USB drive ( around 2gb for jailbreaking and atleast 12GB to transfer games from pc to console)

3. An internet connection


JAILBREAKING YOUR PS3



STEP 1 : first confirm your ps3 firmware version.

to do this, in your ps3 home screen go to [settings > system settings] and your current firmware version will be displayed. if its 3.55 then you can skip STEP 2 and 3. if its LESS than 3.55 then you have to follow the next step and the one after that


STEP 2 : If your firmware version is less than 3.55 you need to update your PS3 to 3.55 ( official). Download the official 3.55 FIRMWARE version from this link

STEP 3: a) installing OFW 3.55 - Make a folder 'PS3' ( without quotes) in an external USB device, inside that folder create folder 'UPDATE' ( without quotes) and paste above downloaded update file PS3UPDAT.PUP inside the 'UPDATE' folder in your external USB device. so the path will be External USB > PS3 > UPDATE > PS3UPDAT.PUP ( note : the folders should be named in CAPITAL letters)

next step is to install the OFW on your ps3. To do this plugin in your external USB drive to your PS3 and go to, [ settings > update via storage media] and the ps3 will search your USB drive and show you the update. follow the steps onscreen and after a few minutes ps3 will restart and you should be on OFW 3.55


STEP 4 : At this point you should have your ps3 running on the official Firmware version 3.55 Now you need to download the CFW for 3.55. you can get it from the following link. the name of the FIRMWARE is Kmeaw 3.55

STEP 5 : Installing the CFW on your ps3 3.55

Create Folder 'PS3' in your USB drive and inside that create folder 'UPDATE' and copy contents in the above downloaded file to the 'UPDATE' folder. ( copy only the PS3UPDAT.PUP file )


STEP 6 : To install the Custom FIRMWARE you need to enter your ps3 into RECOVERY MODE

follow these steps to enter RECOVERY MODE

1. Put ps3 into STANDBY mode ( power switch on with the RED light )
2. Hold The power button down till The system turns on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. Release the power button at this moment.
5. you will be asked to connect your controller VIA usb cable. DO IT
5. your PS3 is now in recovery mode


STEP 7 : connect your External USB drive to the ps3 and select 'System Update' from the recovery menu and follow the steps onscreen.


STEP 8 : Your PS3 will reboot



YOUR PS3 CONSOLE HAS NOW BEEN JAILBROKEN

NOTE : Jailbreaking VOIDS warranty and MAY BRICK YOUR CONSOLE. DO this at your own risk. Kmeaw 3.55 has hardly bricked a console so if you follow these steps you should be fine

PROS and CONS of jailbreaking

PROS : 1. Can download and play ps3 games that require firmware versions less or equal to 3.55. for a full list of compatible game go to the following link ( if atleast one of the first 2 columns are green the game can be played)

2. new CFW might be released in the future but dont get your hopes up SONY is good at protecting their system

CONS :1. NO ONLINE GAMEPLAY ( LOGIN TO PSN requires latest firmware so if you update your ps3 you will LOSE YOUR JAILBREAK ) your id will be banned as well

2. Latest releases cannot be played on CFW 3.55

so if you decide to jailbreak your ps3 its best you take off the network cables
