Some 89 houses were damaged some extensively at different locations in the Badalkumbura, Buttala and Badulla areas shortly before dusk yesterday evening, an official with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said today.

DMC Spokesperson Pradeep Kodippilli said that the houses were damaged owing to a sudden gust of strong winds that swept the area. However not a single person was reported to be displaced owing to the incident, he added.

Officials with the Department of Meteorology said that the winds were the outcome of the monsoon conditions that is currently prevalent over several parts of the country adding that similar weather could be expected at any time in the next few days as well.
