I always remembered hearing stories of Mother Teresa, when an analogy was needed for a good person or act. I never batted an eye until Christopher Hitchens came on the scene. Hitchens insisted that Mother Teresa was anything but the apolitical savior of the poor that she was known to be. Rather, he blasted the nun for being a willing political tool for the Vatican, a validator of corrupt, right-wing political leaders, and even more surprisingly, a suppressor, rather than savior, of the poor. Mother Teresa was incorrectly adored by the media, he insisted.

Quite a claim to call out one of the most beloved individuals of our time, but that is the Hitchens that we came to love and adore. Not afraid to stand out from the crowd and point out the flaws. For the first time the world started to really look at Mother Teresa.
A recent study by the University of Ottawa came out in agreement with the late Hitchens, in saying
She was a cruel woman who believed that there was glory in the suffering of the sick. She made people with grave illnesses sicker by denying them medication and forcing them to writhe in pain while she squirreled away “enormous sums of money” that could have been used to help them.
Clearly a different image than what we had thought she was, the study goes on to say
Mother Teresa successfully orchestrated a deceitful media campaign for herself that painted her in a light altogether different from the woman she really was, and that she manipulated public opinion to reflect her deeds as altruistic when they were seemingly sadistic. She also defended a priest, Donald McGuire, who she knew to be a pedophile, campaigning for him to be returned to his position after he had been removed from it following allegations of abuse. After he was returned to his position at her urging, he went on to molest at least eight additional boys until he was finally arrested in 2005.[2]
The researchers studied hundreds of official documents, some of those from the actual doctors that visited Mother Teresa’s facilities, commenting on the barbaric and unsanitary conditions. It sounds as though the attempted covering up of the pedophile was just a small sample of the true nastiness of Mother Teresa, using her religion to her full advantage.
