The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka granted approval to Hong Kong-based Shangri-La hotels chain to set up a seven star hotel in Colombo. Shangri-La Asia announced the purchase of six acres of Government land facing the Galle Face green promenade for this purpose.
The development will be a multi-use complex with retailing, deluxe apartments and a 500-key luxury hotel scheduled to be open in early 2014. The purchase marks the entry of the hotel group into Sri Lanka. The project will amount to an investment of USD 500 million. The group has already invested USD 75 million to acquire land and other necessary resources for the project. The integrated hotel is to be named, Shangri-La Lanka Hotel.
Madhu Rao, Executive Director/Chief Financial Officer of Shangri-La Asia and his delegation from the hotel chain paid a courtesy call on President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development, Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the President, Dr P B Jayasundera, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and Planning and Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka were present at the meeting. Representatives from Shangri-La Hotels included Sajad Mawzoon, Director, Shangri-La Hotels Lanka, Kuok Meng Xiong, Senior Assistant to the Chairman of Shangri-La Asia, Sabrinah Mawzoon and Musthafa Markar.
Shangri La is also planning to develop a second property, a 300-key city resort on approximately 100 acres of land in Hambantota. These investments will benefit not merely the tourism sector in the country, but also property development, shopping facilities and boost the country's image.
"The entry of the Shangri-La global network is an endorsement of the economic prospects that Sri Lanka has gained since President Mahinda Rajapaksa ended the long drawn conflict, and accelerated long term infrastructure development, through the creation of a stable economic environment while promoting a rural-centric development strategy. It also marks the beginning of a new journey of a high level of Foreign Direct Investment that Sri Lanka needs in order to accelerate an economic growth in excess of eight percent and position Sri Lanka as an emerging middle income country in Asia," commented Dr P B Jayasundera, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and Planning.
The Secretary also confirmed that several of the world's leading investors have expressed interest to undertake a wide range of investment activities in 2011.
"Sri Lanka is a country of unsurpassed natural beauty, rich in cultural heritage and above all it is well recognised for its warm and hospitable population,' said Greg Dogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Shangri-La International Hotel Management. "The local government is fully committed to rebuilding the economy following the end of three decades of conflict and we believe that Shangri-La will be able to assist in positioning the country as a prime global tourist destination. Both Shangri-La hotels strategically fit into the group's ongoing expansion plans to link the Indian subcontinent and our South East Asia developments," he added.
The Hong-Kong based Shangri-La hotel chains is one of the world's premier hotel companies, currently managing 70 hotels. The group has a substantial development pipeline with upcoming projects around the world including projects in Australia, Canada, China, India, Malaysia, Russia and theUnited Kingdom.
The Shangri-La investment will see the creation of a world-class hotel facility complying with the architectural values. To be constructed in the heart of Colombo, the opening of the new hotel is seen as an investment not merely in the tourism sector, but also in property development, shopping facilities and several integrated investment activities in urban development, thus benefiting the country at large.
