UNP, JVP agree in principle on support for candidate
The UNP says that the key points highlighted by the JVP to support a common candidate at the next presidential election, is acceptable to them in principle. The UNP also accused the government of spying on talks between the opposition parties.
UNP General Secretary MP Tissa Attanayake told a news conference today that the newly formed the United National Front (UNF) had commenced negotiations with all the political parties in the opposition on the common candidate.
Mr. Attanayake said that these talks are going on at unofficial levels, and as a result, declined to name these parties.
“The government has approached some of the parties in our alliance to win over them through various offers. The government has established an espionage system to monitor our movements and interactions with those concerned. So, it is safe to not to divulge what is transpiring at our meetings,” he said.
