The Government today announced that the controversial South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine would be made into a not-for-profit Institute under the Higher Education Ministry and the University Grants Commission.


In a statement the Department of Government Information stated that the Presidential Committee appointed to resolve the SAITM issues had recommended the abolishing of the SAITM and the Dr. Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital and his family would cease to hold any ownership rights on SAITM.

“Properties, responsibilities, staff and students of the SAITM will be handed over to the new institute,” it said.

Accordingly the committee has recommended the Health Ministry to Gazette the agreed minimum standards for medical education and training to be presented in Parliament.


A special committee of with high level officials would be appointed to implement and coordinate the Presidential Committee’s recommendations. and all process to be completed by December 31 this year, it said.

එම යෝජනා අනුව වෛද්‍ය නෙවිල් ප්‍රනාන්දු මහතා හිමිකාරීත්වය දරන ලාභ පදනම් කරගත් ආයතනය අහෝසි කෙරෙන අතර යෝජිත නව රාජ්‍ය නොවන ආයතනය එහි ආදායම ආයතනයේ සංවර්ධනයට, පර්යේෂණ කටයුතුවලට හෝ ශිෂ්‍යත්ව ලබාදීම සඳහා යෙදවීමට එම යෝජනාවලියේ සඳහන් කර තිබේ.

සයිටම් ආයතනයේ වෛද්‍ය පීඨය සම්බන්ධයෙන් උද්ගත වී ඇති ගැටළුව නිරාකරණය කරගැනීම සඳහා ජනාධිපති මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහතා විසින් පත්කළ ජනාධිපති කමිටුව ඉදිරිපත් කර ඇති විසඳුම් ඇතුළත් නිවේදනයක් රජයේ ප්‍රවෘත්ති දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව අද (29) නිකුත් කළේය.

සයිටම් ආයතනය වර්තමාන හිමිකාරිත්වයෙන් සම්පූර්ණයෙන් ඉවත් කිරීමට ද යෝජනා කර තිබේ.

වෛද්‍ය විද්‍යාලවල අවම ප්‍රමිතිය ගැසට් කිරීමට ද එමගින් යෝජනා කර ඇති අතර මේ සමස්ත ක්‍රියාවලිය අගෝස්තු 31 වැනිදාට පෙර අවසන් කළ යුතු බව ද සඳහන් කර තිබේ.

නම සහ හිමිකාරීත්වය පමනක් වෙනස් වේ. මුදල් අයකිරීම, මුදල් නොමැති නම් එම ආයතනයෙන් වෛද්‍ය උපාධිය රටට ලෝකෙට ණය නොවී ලබා ගැනීමට නොහැකි වීම, එනම් මුදල මත වෛද්‍ය වරයෙකු වීම වරප්‍රසාදයක් ලෙස තීරණය වීම එලෙසමයි... රජයට පවරාගෙන නැත.

Not all. Government universities should be there and this kind of non profit's to fill the gap.. this is a good move.

No this is not actually good. What we need is a regulatory body which can govern the quality of Sri Lankan universities both public and private. Public uni. students are trying to close down every private tertiary educational institutions so that they can hold on to their monopoly in tertiary education.
