Hashini Amendra, the wife of veteran singer Victor Ratnayake wanted over a gold jewellery fraud at a state bank in Tangalle surrendered to the police yesterday morning. She was later produced before the Tangalle Magistrate and remanded till January 17.
The 31-year-old is suspected of having switched pawned gold jewellery in the bank with imitations. The Manager of the bank has lodged a complaint with the Tanglle police that the suspect had allegedly switched gold jewellery worth Rs. 989,000 pawned by customers from Nov 14, 2012 to April 22, 2016.
The suspect surrendered to the police through a lawyer.
If she had not surrendered the singer, too, would have been arrested on the charge of harbouring a wanted suspect, police said.
The complaint had been lodged about one and half years back, sources said, adding that the police had not proceeded with investigations.
Police said that they had been investigating and meeting the complainants to record their statements on the issue and that had taken time.
