The Mass Media and Information Ministry of Sri Lanka says that it is currently monitoring several unregistered websites that publish gossip.

Ministry Secretary W.B. Ganegala has said that while continuous requests have been made from websites to register with the Ministry, only 45 websites have so far been registered.

He has observed that the unregistered websites acted in violation of media ethics and were mostly engaged in publishing gossip.

He has noted that the government would have to take action against the websites that fail to register and continue to publish defamatory articles.

The Mass Media and Information Ministry last November ordered telecom companies to block access to five websites. But a Supreme Court decision in December granted permission for the blocked websites to resume operations.

The Ministry also reissued a directive for all websites carrying Sri Lankan news to register with the Mass Media and Information Ministry.
