Call of Duty 4 - Punkbuster Update & Assistance

Trying to play on a Punkbuster enabled server? Getting kicked every time you try to connect? One common problem is that PB may not have been updated and may require updating. So let's try updating Punkbuster.

1. Go over to http://evenbalance.com/. This is the punkbuster's homepage


2. Click the "Download PBSetup" button and you will be redirected to a screen like this -


3. Scroll down and click the link to your Operating System version. You will be redirected to a page with a CAPTCHA. After entering the text - download will begin.
NOTE - For the purposes of this tutorial, I have downloaded the Windows installation.

4. Open the zip file and run the setup inside.


5. If prompted by UAC, click Yes. Then after this screen shows up, click "I Agree".


6. A box like this will show up -

Click OK and it will start checking for PBSetup updates.

7. Click "Add Game"

Under the "Game" dropdown box select "Call of Duty 4" -

And under "Game Path", browse to the setup location. e.g. -

Then click "Add Game" -


8. Now click "Check for Updates" in this screen -

PBSetup checks for updates and will update Punkbuster if an update is available -

If Punkbuster is already up to date, a message box like this will show up -


9. Click "Quit" and then run the game.

Assistance with Punkbuster GUID ban

This error only appears if your key code has been used by someone (if not you) to hack a server and has been added to Punkbuster's global banlist.
To fix this, you will have to change your key code. Remember to backup your profile folder inside your <game_folder>\players\profiles to make sure you don't loose your stats.


Note - Replace backup profile folder after starting the game the first time. i.e. Start game, quit, restore backup and begin playing.

If GUID ban is there then your keycode should be blocked across all PB active servers.

Losing Key Packets -

Some other software programs such as virus scanners, firewalls and Internet security software packages are suspicious of any new services and kernel drivers when they are first released. Some of these will block our new components thereby causing the "Losing Key Packets" kicking. Until these various packages are updated to correctly identify PnkBstrA.exe, PnkBstrB.exe, and PnkBstrK.sys as components of the PunkBuster Anti-Cheat System, players who experience PunkBuster kicks due to these conflicts need to either manually adjust the settings of the other software running on their system or disable the other software while playing on PunkBuster enabled servers. The new PunkBuster components make use of network resources and also frequently update files in the Windows system folders. This activity triggers warnings or blocks by some other security programs, some of which consider all unknown programs as threats or malware. Our new components are simply extensions of the existing PunkBuster system using new services and kernel software drivers, and are each signed with Verisign / Authenticode digital signatures for verifiable authenticity purposes. Most major security packages do not block our new components; users with other software that causes these conflicts should contact the vendor of their security package and request an update to correct this conflict.

Try unblocking PB in firewall, or if you are on a slow connection (rare case), packet loss can take place and you will be kicked. If this is the case, try and close some programs using your bandwidth.

Corrupted File/Memory -

Navigate to the PB folder inside your COD4 directory and delete it.
NOTE- Backup folder first.
Then repeat manual PB update procedure.
