    So lets get started.

Can anyone become a Software Engineer(SE)?

Yes, but not a good programmer. Only a few people can become a good programmer. It is said that Programming is an Art not a Science.

First of all you need to figure out what path exactly match your skills. Everybody has at least one skill. We should find it out. How to do that? Lets say if you don't feel tired or bored when you are doing something that is where your skill is. To tell you, I don't feel tired even hungry when I write software. So that is where my skill is. Until to the last minute I was unable to find my skill. As I told you in my earlier thread I failed programming subjects at University. So I had to learn my self to get through repeat subjects. If I passed those subjects at first attempt I wouldn't be in this position today. Simply thinks everything happens for good. Make sure that you do your best at whatever you do. There are lot of peoples who are looking for a job as SE. If you are the right person there will definitely be an opportunity. Lets see what you need to have to become a SE.

Reading for a degree in CS or SE

Having a degree in CS/SE is not a requirement to become a SE but compulsory for applying most of the job advertisement. Reading for first degree in CS/SE will give you depth knowledge on the subject. So I strongly recommend you to start your journey with a prestigious degree. Our next question is what degree best suits for requirement. If you have strong desire to become an SE you may choose an SE degree.

If you are still doing A/L then you are lucky. Put your fullest effort and get selected to government Uni. If you have scored enough to do Engineering courses then you have no option. If not you can select other CS courses according to your marks. Almost all the government Unis now offer CS courses. Last option would be doing physical science degree selecting CS as main subject. You are given 3 attempts to do this, Use them all:yes:.

In the case of you are not scored enough to get selected to Gov. Uni courses you may go for private education. If you ended up with 3F's at all 3 attempts though you worked hard, it is up to you deciding move forward as SE:no:. There are lot of private institutions offering degree programs. What should I select? This is probably your next question. Remember that most of them are to steal your money. When selecting a program consider the fact that which Organization will offer you the degree. University having international reputation is a key point. Find how many students has completed and how many of them are employed. Also compare the resource panel, their qualifiaction and their research capabilities. I have seen some institute offer degrees in programming languages:P. They are not aware about at least SDLC(Software Development Life Cycle). Development where you use programming languages is only one phase in SDLC. Typically there are another 6 phases you need to practice. If you missed opportunities at your A/L, your next option is selecting SLIIT/APIT or IIT etc. Another good choice is BIT offered by either UCSC or Mora. They have good value for what you pay. If you finish your BIT with a upper class you may later do a MSc at UCSC/Mora or SLIIT. So there are lot of opportunities to grow. Never give up.

It is very important you to understand that you are reading for a degree and not attending tuition classes. This is one of the major drawback I see in external students. At the end you will have to compete with internal students for the same seat. Always look for adding something new to your knowledge bank. Read all related reference materials and search the web. Always practice, revise your knowledge.

Now you are going to be a bachelor in CS or SE. Next thread will be specific to Java. How to learn programming with Java.

    සිංහලෙන් ලියන්න ඕන නම් කියපල්ලා. මම kadda දන්නෙත් නෑ වැඩිය. ඒත් kadden type කරන එක ලේසිනේ.
