To prepare an engine for the fifth pod, Qantas removes the fan blades from the engine and installs a fairing over the engine core. They also install an additional fairing over the front of the engine cowling to further reduce drag.
After the engine has been configured, it takes about 3 hours to install the strut which supports the engine on the aircraft’s wing and the engine itself. Qantas says it takes less time for the engine to be removed from the aircraft. The engine and strut are attached to anchor points on the underside of the left wing, inboard of the operating engines.
"The 3rd Pod (and 5th pod) were part of the Aircraft basic build on the L1011/B747. Airbus were prepared to develop the capability for a 5th pod on the A340 but only as a cost-option based on customer requests. Regarding the L1011, this was and remained until the advent of the A330/A340 the most technically sophisticated Aircraft on the market. Lockheed engineered much of their military and space technology into the Aircraft. The humble 'switch-light', push-buttons that incorporate an illuminated legend (off/on/fault) that dominates cockpits on all of today's Aircraft were first used on the L1011 to produce the 'dark-cockpit' concept (no illumination means everything is on and working as it should), a significant reduction in crew workload.
The AFCS (automatic flight control system) on the L1011 could be used for a complete automatic flight from take-off to landing. DLC (direct lift control) used the spoilers to maintain a constant pitch angle on the glideslope during approach and was later incorporated into the space shuttle for its un-powered landings . The combination of digital avionics and active controls in the L1011-500 delivered in 1978, predate the first 'fly-by-wire' Aircraft when operated in CWS (command wheel steering) mode. The Aircraft was a true wide body, quiet by comparison to its competitors (dubbed the 'whiperliner' by Eastern Airlines in the USA), powerful and fast (M0.9 could be achieved in the cruise). Originally conceived as a twin-engine Aircraft in 1968, the 3rd engine was added to meet runway performance requirements and allowed Lockheed to add a plethora of system redundancy that included another innovation common today, the RAT (ram air turbine). The all-flying tailplane with mechanically geared elevator was unique, as was the ability to separate the 02 cockpit control wheels in case of a jam in pitch or roll and fly the Aircraft from the other side. The Aircraft incorporated the latest manufacturing methods with bonded structures and 01 Aircraft was assembled on the production line every 18 days..."
