A man has been charged with murder over the death of a 48-year-old Melbourne mother who was found with severe upper body injuries in her own home last week.
Police said the 21-year-old man from Lara, near Geelong, had been remanded in custody after an out-of-sessions court hearing on Saturday night, and would appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court today.
Investigators allege he entered the Hoppers Crossing home of Prasad Somawansa between 8pm and 9.25pm on February 18 and killed her.
Her body was discovered when her husband, who was in Brisbane for work, asked a friend to check on her after his calls to the home went unanswered.
Police have previously said it may have been a random attack.
Mrs Somawansa’s 21-year-old SES volunteer son learned of her death while out on a job.
"He's obviously traumatised, as you can understand," police said.
Her husband and son are speaking with police but neither are suspects, investigators said.
Mrs Somawansa has been described by neighbours as a quiet and loving woman.
The house was not ransacked, and police are checking whether anything was stolen.
Mrs Somawansa’s body was taken to the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
