Ephedrine hydrochloride
Corex D cough syrup is formulated for the relief of irritating and troublesome cough. It
has antitussive, antihistaminic and nasal decongestant actions.
Composition
Each 5ml (teaspoonful) of Corex D Cough Syrup contains:
Chlorpheniramine maleate 2mg
Dextromethorphan hydrobromide 15mg
Ephedrine hydrochloride 5mg
ACTIONS
Chlorpheniramine maleate is an antihistamine which reduces allergic vasodilation and
mucosal congestion. Dextromethorphan hydrobromide is a non narcotic cough
suppressant, which is as effective as codeine and like codeine acts centrally to elevate the
cough threshold. It does not have addictive, analgesic or sedative actions and does not
produce respiratory depression in therapeutic doses. Ephedrine hydrochloride relieves
bronchospasm and reduces nasal congestion.
INDICATIONS
Corex D Cough Syrup is indicated for the relief of troublesome bouts of coughing,
especially coughs that disturb sleep and cause pain. It is effective in dry, unproductive
coughs such as those which are associated with influenza, whooping cough, heavy
smoking and allergies.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Corex D is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any of its constituents.
PRECAUTIONS
Dextromethorphan and Chlorpheniramine may cause drowsiness. Caution should be
exercised when driving and operating machinery and appliances. High doses of
Dextromethrphan may cause central nervous system and respiratory depression. The
following should not be administered concomitantly with Corex D, antihypertensives
with central nervous system depressant effects, sedatives, tranquilizers, alcohol, MAO
inhibitors and other CNS depressants. Corex D should be used with caution in patients
with history of hypertension, heart disease, diabetis mellitus, hyperthyroidism, increased
intra ocular pressure, bronchial asthma and hepatic impairment.
ADVERSE EFFECTS
Adverse effects occur rarely with the suggested dosage. Chlorpheniramine may cause
drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, weakness, nausea and headache.
Dextromethorphan is generally well tolerated and adverse reactions are mild and occur
infrequently. Occasionally it causes drowsiness, dizziness, excitation, mental confusion
and gastrointestinal disturbances. Ephedrine may cause tremor, anxiety, insomnia,
tachycardia, transient hypertension and palpitations.
