With SymSMB now you can access your phone wirelessly over a Wi-Fi network. After you install this application and turn on the service, your phone will appear as a computer in your network neighborhood. This in fact is a samba server for Symbian, therefore it will work with any OS (Windows, Linux, Mac) without having to install any additional software on the PC.

You can also access network shares from your phone, SymSMB has a music player that allows you to play music on shared folders without downloading them on your phone .

I installed it on my 5800, now I don't have to worry about taking the USB data cable or waiting hours at a time to copy music to my phone with BT. It is really fast, close to 800~1Mbps (ok maybe not as fast as USB, but certainly much much faster than BT).

this is also a good way to get viruses in to the phone. Viruses that spread via samba shares (windows file shares) can spread it self in to the phone with this.
So be very careful if you plan to use this on your phone.

I use this on trusted networks. But anyways, even if there are viruses that can spread though samba servers, can it really infect a Symbian OS? unless the virus is specially written for it?? which is highly unlikely given that this is the first time I came across a samba server for Symbian, so the number of users must be very low, not worth the trouble writing a virus for it.. don't you think ?

no it wont infect the phone but your phone will act as a carrier for the virus. As soon as you connect it to another network and access the file share on the phone from a PC, that PC will get infected. It migh even be your home PC.
Oh and securing the wifi network does not mean that the windows file shares are virus free.

I meant trusted as in I trust the network to be safe, not that it is encrypted by a password. Because normally I only connect to my home network (where only My PCs are connected) and the university network, which I think is a virus free environment.

I've only tried this with Wireless routers, but I don't see why it shouldn't work with an ad-hoc network. It uses already defined Wi-Fi access points of the phone, so if you have tried connecting your phone to a laptop before over an ad-hoc network then it will work.
