Within a week of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's re-election, 12 senior military officers were dismissed for being a "threat to national security" and hatching "political conspiracy" during the presidential elections.

Rajapaksa defeated his main challenger and former Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka, who rejected the outcome alleging vote-rigging and lodged several objections with the Electoral Commission.

Reports say the dismissed officers included three Major- Generals and four Brigadiers.

Fonseka, who has been Sri Lanka's s Army Chief during the final three-year phase in the island-nation's civil war, was removed from the post after the mission was accomplished in May.

He was later named Chief of Defense Staff, a largely ceremonial post. The top soldier resigned on November 12 accusing the government of sidelining him and of falsely claiming he was trying to stage a coup.
