4 main types of Wireless Networks

Wireless Personal Area NW
W/less Local Area NW
W/less Metropilitan Area NW
W/less Wide Area NW

In Wireless Personal area Networking there are 3 main standards

1) ZigBee - IEEE 802.15.4 - 40 to 100m range, 20kbps up to 127 devices
2) Bluetooth - IEEE 802.15.1 - 10 to 30m range, 1-3Mbps up to 8 devices
3) WUSB - IEEE 802.15.3a - 10m range, 480Mbps up to 127 devices

Bluetooth Security Threats

Bluetooth worms: Self replicating malicious code e.g. Cabir

Bluejacking: Sending Spam messages

Bluesnarfing: Remotely accessing information stored in the device. (Contacts, sms storage etc.)

Bluebugging: Remotely accessing mobile phone commands. (Can even switch off the mobile)

Interception: Using special bluetooth devices to interrupt a connection (paired devices)

Denial of Service: Constantly requesting something from the mobile until the mobile is out of its resources. (Maybe the bandwidth or the battery power etc.)

Bluetooth Security Controls.

Switching off the discoverable mode: No one can connect to any bluetooth equipped device if bluetooth is switched off in that device

Only pair devices in private: Never connect and do transactions in public places

Never pair with an unknown device: Always if someone is trying to connect to your device, you will get a message asking whether to accept the connection or reject the connection. So if you don't know who the other person is, then simply reject the connection.

Walk away: This is the best control for bluetooth devices. If you see some weird thing is happening in your phone. Simply move from that place. Bluetooth devices can communicate maximum 30m. So if you go pass this, then definitely the connection will terminate.
