Several eyewitness reports have indeed confirmed that the L.T.T.E. had fired mortar shells towards the Army camps near Vakarai prompting the Armed Forces to retaliate, unintentionally causing the deaths of 26 civilians and injuring at least 125. It is also confirmed that a senior L.T.T.E. leader was killed in the retaliatory fire.
