Marathon :: මැරතන්
මැරතන් යනු දීර්ඝ දුරක් ධාවනය කරන ඉසව්වකි. ඒ සඳහා සම්මත දුර වනුයේ කිලෝමීටර් 42195කි. (සැතපුම්26 යාර 385) සාමාන්යයෙන් මෙය මාර්ග ධාවන තරඟයකි. පුරාවෘත්තයට අනුව මෙම ධාවන තරඟයට මැරතන් යන නම ලැබුනේ පණිවිඩ කරුවකු ලෙස මැරතන් යුද්ධයේදී ක්රියාකල ග්රීක සොල්දාදුවකු වන "පිහිඩිපීඩ්" නිසාය. ප්රථමයෙන්ම 1896 දී ඔලිම්පික් ක්රීඩාවලට මැරතන් ධාවන තරඟය එක් වූ නමුත් මේ සඳහා දුර ප්රමාණය ප්රමිතිගත කරන ලද්දේ 1921 දීය. අවුරුද්දක් තුළ දී මැරතන් ධාවන තරඟ 800කට වඩා ලොව පුරා පවත්වනු ලබයි. ඒවාට තරඟකරුවන් විශාල ප්රමාණයක් විනෝදය පිණිස සහභාගී වේ. විශාල මැරතන් තරඟ සඳහා දස දහස් ගණන් පිරිසකට වුවද සහභාගී විය හැක.

He ran 240 km (150 miles) in two days. He then ran the 40 km (25 miles) from the battlefield near the town of Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek victory over Persia in the Battle of Marathon (490 BC) with the word (Nenikékamen, 'We have won') and collapsed and died on the spot because of exhaustion.
