Amidst claims by UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera to the media that 25 UNP parliamentarians were planning on sitting independently, only nine MPs, including two female legislators, have agreed to sit independently, sources from the Cambridge Terrace Opposition Leader’s Office said. A majority of them are from Sajith’s group.
Thalatha Atukorale, Chandrani Bandara, Kabir Hashim, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Sujeewa Senasinghe, Gayantha Karunathileka, Asoka Abeysinghe, Harsha de Silva and Dayasiri Jayasekera have so far decided to sit independently in parliament. Two other Sajith loyalists, Dilip Vedarachchi and Rosy Senanayake have not agreed to sit independently in the House.
Sources said that the proposal to sit independently in parliament was proposal made by Minister Johnston Fernando and parliamentarian Lakshman Seneviratne to Thalatha and Dayasiri after hearing about it had made it public in a bid to gain political mileage.
The official from the Opposition Leader’s Office said that the decision to sit independently is clearly the first step for joining the government,
