Images of History!

The Colombo Intl or Bandaranaike Intl Air Port......was attacked by the LTTE twice.....in 1986 & again in 2001.
Featured are some formerly Air Lanka & now Sri Lankan Air Lines Air Crafts, which were destroyed as a result.
As an immediate consequence, Tourist arrivals in the Island was badly reduced and Insurance Premiums for all Imports /Exports sky rocketed as War Risk Clauses applied.
The times were so bad that, even Entry to the Air Port Terminals were a hazard, as people had to go through major security checks and had to use Buses provided by the Authorities from particular points, away from the Terminal Buildings....not to mention the Road Blocks and Armed Forces Personnel manning the Roads in most locations.
Today, as we see, it is a totally different environment @ BIA...as featured in the last image here

When J.R. Jayewardene became President in 1978 he invited The first Prime Minister of Singpore Lee Kuan Yew to Sri Lanka. When the latter was J.R. Jayewardene’s guest at Queen’s Cottage Nuwara Eliya, he arranged for Upali Wijewardene to have tea with them to pick ideas from Lee Kwan Yew on how best to rapidly develop Sri Lanka’s economy Singapore style.... ( In 1968, Singapore launched what was to become a hugely successful cleanliness campaign. Today, the island country is among the best-run and cleanest city systems in the world.

In the words of Lee Kuan Yew, then president of Singapore: “Everybody can see the point of a neat home, clean kitchen, clean food and healthy children. But responsibility stops too often at the doorstep.” , it’s time for each of us to take that small but critical step forward.
